BOLSA UNDERGROUNDING PROJECT FROM PURDY TO BROOKHURST

The City of Westminster, Southern California Edison (SCE), AT&T, Verizon, Time Warner, and the City of Garden Grove are working collaboratively to underground all of the overhead wires along the north side of Bolsa Avenue between 400 feet east of Purdy Street and Brookhurst Street.  This segment of Bolsa Avenue was established by the City Council as the Underground Utility District No. 6 in June 2008.  As part of this project, a decorative pedestrian street lighting system will be installed along the north side of Bolsa Avenue from Magnolia Street to Brookhurst Street.  This project is fully funded by SCE Allocated Rule 20A, Municipal Street Light District funds, and other tariffs from the abovementioned utility companies.  The project is anticipated to commence construction in November 2010, and major construction activities are anticipated to be completed by April 2011.  For the upcoming 2011 Vietnamese TET festivities, the construction activities will be suspended beginning January 24, through February 6, 2011. Construction equipment as well as traffic control devices/cones will be removed completely.

The following is the anticipated project schedule:

·         Install underground conduits, vaults, and pavement repair from November 2010 to April 2011

·         Install new cables and re-establish service connections from April 2011 to April 2012 (this is not a major construction activity)

·         Remove existing wooden poles and project completion April 2012

Unlike the landscaped median construction in 2005 on Bolsa Avenue, the contractor will be working only within one travel lane next to the curb on the north side of Bolsa Avenue in small segments.  When necessary, the contractor will only close one driveway at a time and reopen it as soon as possible in the same day.  Working hours will be from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM weekdays and no construction work will be done on major holidays or weekends.

In the end, this project will aesthetically beautify Bolsa corridor and Little Saigon business district with new and improved undergrounded facilities, and a complete decorative pedestrian lighting system with no overhead wires.

Construction information and updates are also available on the City website at www.westminster-ca.gov.
