In October 2007, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MET) began adding fluoride to drinking water to prevent tooth decay. Fluoride helps teeth resist decay by strengthening the protective layer of tooth enamel, and can reverse newly formed cavities. It has been added to U.S. drinking water supplies since 1945. Westminster imports approximately 20% of its potable drinking water from MET.
