The City of Westminster has released its May Emergency Preparedness Bulletin, providing residents with important information on wildfire preparedness and response.
May is National Wildfire Awareness Month. The bulletin covers key steps residents can take to prepare, including signing up for emergency alerts, creating a household evacuation plan, reviewing insurance documents, and building a go bag with essential supplies. Residents are also encouraged to strengthen their homes by creating a fire-resistant zone of at least 30 feet, using fire-resistant building materials, and designating an indoor room that can be sealed from outside air during smoky conditions.
The bulletin also provides guidance on what to do during a wildfire, including evacuating immediately when directed by local authorities, using an N95 mask to limit smoke inhalation, and sheltering in place safely if not ordered to evacuate. Residents returning home after a wildfire are reminded to avoid hot ash and smoldering debris, wear protective clothing during cleanup, and document property damage for insurance purposes.
Residents are encouraged to review the bulletin and consider subscribing to the City's Emergency Bulletins and Public Safety updates to receive timely information as it becomes available.
