Evacuation Updates, State of Emergency

Mandatory evacuations are in order in northern Westminster and the City Manager has declared a State of Emergency.

WESTMINSTER, Calif. – Portions of the City of Westminster are included in a mandatory evacuation order as part of an ongoing chemical incident response in the City of Garden Grove. The City Manager has declared a State of Emergency for the City of Westminster.

Emergency responders from multiple agencies are working to address the situation safely. As a precautionary measure, the mandatory evacuation area has expanded to include portions of northern Westminster. The current mandatory evacuation has expanded from Valley View Street to Dale Avenue from Ball Road to Trask Avenue. Roads are currently closed at Trask Avenue and Beach Boulevard as well as Goldenwest Street and Trask Avenue. Bolsa Chica Park and restrooms at 13660 University St., Goldenwest Park at 13200 Siskiyou St., and Frank G. Fry Park at 7481 21st St. are within the evacuation zone and will be closed until further notice. Anyone within the evacuation area is strongly urged to comply with the evacuation orders. The Orange County Fire Authority shared in a press conference an industrial tank containing a flammable, highly volatile plastic epoxy called methyl methacrylate will either fail and spill chemicals into the parking lot and area surrounding the facility or could explode, affecting surrounding tanks at an aerospace facility in Garden Grove. Methyl methacrylate is a skin and respiratory irritant that can cause health problems from both short- and long-term exposure.

The City of Westminster and Westminster Police Department are assisting residents within the impacted area and are coordinating closely with partner agencies.

While the mandatory evacuation area remains limited, residents throughout the surrounding area are encouraged to stay informed and take reasonable precautions as conditions evolve.

WAGS, at 6621 Westminster Boulevard, is sheltering animals for affected residents and has reached capacity. The Westminster Senior Center, at 8200 Westminster Blvd., is open to residents, including residents with dogs, who require a safe place, though space is limited. As of Friday afternoon, the City of Westminster in partnership with the Red Cross has capacity for 250 evacuees. Residents are encouraged to explore other available sheltering options if possible.
