Update: Portions of Westminster Remain Evacuated; RV Parking, Hotels and Shelters Available to Evacuees

Mandatory evacuations continue in northern Westminster.

WESTMINSTER, Calif. – Mandatory evacuations that include portions of the City of Westminster continue due to the ongoing hazardous materials incident occurring in the City of Garden Grove. Orange County Fire Authority shared in its latest update that the chances of an explosion have been reduced. The next update is expected Monday, May 25.

The situation continues to evolve, and information will be shared as updates become available. An end time has not been provided for the evacuation orders from the Orange County Fire Authority. The City of Westminster and Westminster Police Department continue to assist residents within the impacted area and to coordinate closely with partner agencies. 

The Orange County Fire Authority’s latest report shared that some pressure has been released through a crack in the affected industrial tank in the City of Garden Grove. The tank contains a flammable, highly volatile plastic epoxy called methyl methacrylate, which is a skin and respiratory irritant. At this time, no dangerous materials have leaked and no residents have been exposed to the material. This positive development reduces the chances of an explosion.

Local hotels have rooms available for evacuees, on a first-come, first-served basis, at the Princess Inn, 15171 Beach Blvd.; Hotel 39, 15559 Beach Blvd.; Best Western Westminster Inn, 5755 Westminster Blvd.; Quality Inn & Suites, 6601 Westminster Blvd.; Executive Suites Inn, 6732 Westminster Blvd., and Best Western Palm Garden Inn, 13659 Beach Blvd. Phone numbers and cost are provided for each hotel below.

Shelters are being run regionally by the American Red Cross. Call 1-800-733-2767 for available shelter information or visit redcross.org/shelters.

The Orange County Fairgrounds, 88 Fair Drive in Costa Mesa, has offered parking for 125 total recreational vehicles, with hook-ups for 25 of those. Golden West College, 15744 Goldenwest St. in Huntington Beach, and Mile Square Park, 16801 Euclid St. in Fountain Valley, have also offered recreational vehicle parking at no charge.

The Westminster Senior Center at 8200 Westminster Blvd. is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, including to residents with dogs who require a safe place for the day, though space is limited. For assistance, including in Vietnamese and Spanish, call (714) 895-2878. WAGS, at 6621 Westminster Boulevard, has reached capacity for sheltering the animals of affected residents.

The mandatory evacuation area includes portions of northern Westminster spanning from Valley View Street to Dale Avenue and from Ball Road to Trask Avenue/Vallecito Avenue in Westminster. Residents who border the evacuation zone who can stay at a safe location away from the evacuation zone are asked to please do so if it makes them feel safer. 

The California Highway Patrol has closed the following freeway interchanges along the 22 Freeway: Beach Boulevard, Goldenwest Street/Knott Street, and Bolsa Chica Road/Valley View Street. Roads are closed at the following locations: 

• Trask Avenue and Beach Boulevard,
• Hoover Street and Trask Avenue,
• Goldenwest Street and Trask Avenue,
• Edwards Street and Trask Avenue,
• Springdale Street and Iroquois Road,
• Hoover Street and Benton Avenue, and
• Springdale Street and Cynthia Drive.

Bolsa Chica Park and restrooms at 13660 University Street, Goldenwest Park at 13200 Siskiyou Street, and Frank G. Fry Park at 7481 21st Street are closed until further notice; these parks are within or border the evacuation zone and are closed out of an abundance of caution. Street sweeping and trash collection are paused, and parking control is not citing passenger vehicles and recreational vehicles within the evacuation area.

Those with homes and businesses within the evacuation areas and throughout the surrounding area are encouraged to stay informed and take reasonable precautions as conditions evolve. For updated evacuation maps, visit ocsheriff.gov/resources-during-disaster.  

Call 911 only for a life-threatening emergency. For questions regarding the incident including questions about public health or the status of the tanks, a public information hotline is available 24 hours a day at (714) 628-7085.

For information about trash pick-up, contact the Midway City Sanitary District at (714) 893-3553. Staff will be available to assist with Vietnamese or Spanish translation between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. at (714) 895-2878. Continúan las evacuaciones obligatorias en el norte de Westminster. 

WESTMINSTER, Calif. – Continúan las evacuaciones obligatorias, que incluyen zonas de la ciudad de Westminster, debido al incidente en curso con materiales peligrosos que ocurrió en la ciudad de Garden Grove. La Autoridad de Bomberos del Condado de Orange (OCFA) informó en su última actualización que las probabilidades de una explosión han disminuido. Se espera la próxima actualización para el lunes 25 de mayo.

La situación continúa evolucionando, y se compartirá información a medida que se disponga de actualizaciones. La Autoridad de Bomberos del Condado de Orange no ha proporcionado una hora de finalización para las órdenes de evacuación.
