Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is an approach that promotes walking and bicycling to school through infrastructure improvements, enforcement, tools, safety education, and incentives to encourage walking and bicycling to school. Nationally, 10%–14% of car trips during morning rush hour are for school travel. SRTS initiatives improve safety and levels of physical activity for students.
The City of Westminster received a Caltrans grant to create a citywide Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Plan. This plan outlines practical steps to make walking and biking to school safer and more comfortable for students, families, and the community. The planning process included input from parents, schools, and community members across all 21 public schools in Westminster. With this plan, the City is better positioned to secure future funding for projects that improve safety for our children — our most vulnerable road users.
