The Mendez Tribute Monument Park and Freedom Trail tells the story of Sylvia Mendez and her brothers Gonzalo Jr. and Jerome, who in 1944 were denied enrollment at Westminster 17th Street School because of their Mexican heritage. Their parents, Gonzalo and Felicitas Mendez, stood up against segregation, joining with other families and supporters to advance civil rights and equality in education.
The City of Westminster dedicated Mendez Tribute Monument Park on December 1, 2022. The Mendez Freedom Trail will open in April 2026. The 2.0-mile trail along Hoover Street features interactive signage highlighting the landmark Mendez v. Westminster School District case and its impact. A new protected bikeway will accompany the trail, providing safe bicycle access and connecting to other city and county bikeways. The trail also serves as an educational resource for local schools and community programs.
